There usually is no way to reuse an alginate mold as it is broken into chunks when being removed. There are few things more exciting than seeing the first finger get exposed while unmolding a hand cast.
Can casting molds be reused?
The truth is that, when involved in any life Casting project, including Baby Hands and Feet Casting, it is virtually impossible to reuse alginate molds, as the algiante will stick to the plaster and crumble during the demoulding process.
How do you preserve alginate mold?
Keeping the alginate in a 100% humidity environment. Covering the surface of the alginate with a wet towel dramatically slows the evaporation, but not the syneresis. Actually, evaporation is much more pronounced in “Layup Molds” than in “Bucket Molds” because they have a much higher “surface area to volume” ratio.

Can you use silicone in an alginate mold?
Platinum silicones can often bond in other alginates that contain crystalline silica. Alja-Safe™ also captures detail better than other alginates, giving you a more accurate reproduction of your original. Alja-Safe™ is easy to use and cures quickly.
Are silicone molds reusable?
Instead of using your silicone for silicone molds, keep it and make silicone castings. And use ComposiMold for the mold making. ComposiMold is a one part molding material that can be remelted and reused to make new molds any time you want.
What is a reusable mold?
A rubber-like material used for taking impressions from life. Applied warm with a brush or palette knife, captures minute details for a negative mold. May be remelted and used over and over.
How long can alginate impressions last?
Numerous studies have evaluated the dimensional accuracy of conventional alginates [2,7–15]. Some studies show that it is possible to store a hydrocolloid impression for up to 1, 2 and even 4 hours [8–10].
Is alginate biodegradable?
Alginate is a natural polysaccharide exhibiting excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, having many different applications in the field of biomedicine.
Is alginate safe for skin?
In addition to being an exceptional skin safe body molding material, certified by an independent laboratory, Alja‑Safe™ alginate does not contain free crystalline silica (a known carcinogen).

Does alginate set hard?
Some of our alginate formulas mix up to a thin consistency and some mix to a fairly thick consistency. Once mixed you have a limited amount of time to use it because alginate changes from a liquid to a rubbery solid after a period of time. This is known as Setting Time (see “Alginate Setting Times” below).
Does alginate stick to hair?
The alginate won’t stick to the hairs and pull them out of the skin, but it can take a very long time to get all the hairs to release from the alginate. The professional way to deal with facial hair is to “fill” the masses of hair with a heavy bodied water based hair cream.
